So I focused on what we can do in my own department, legal and compliance. But as we know, the work does not end with a few key parameters. Eric Grossman, Morgan Stanley`s chief legal officer, on Thursday sent a memo to law firms and legal services firms encouraging them to improve customer service by allowing lawyers and staff to return to the office, according to a company representative. Grossman`s memo suggested that those who continue to operate remotely risk their relationship with the financial services giant. The distinction between mentoring and sponsorship is crucial; A mentor is someone you can talk to about problems or long-term career goals. I expect members of my leadership team to act as both mentors and sponsors, just as I have done for women and various employees who were later promoted to CEO and have taken on leadership roles in legal and compliance, as well as in the companies we support. I require my managers to participate in promoting those on the diverse sponsorship list, and I will encourage those who deliver. It cannot be a passive exercise. We understand that progress requires diligence and tenacity. It`s part science and part art.

For example, with our global mentoring and mentoring programs for high-potential employees, diversity and women, we spend a lot of time considering factors such as experience, interests, and personalities when creating mentor/sponsor matches. Our Legal Sponsorship Program is a way to delegate responsibilities to those who understand the organization`s imperatives while providing advice on how to represent themselves. That is an important part of that. I always look at the audience at town halls and say, „No one cares more about your career than you do. You own it! But many people are reluctant to stand up and promote themselves. Sponsorship and mentorship programs provide support, real feedback and access. We have made great strides in this area, but much remains to be done. In turn, value flows – in the long run, the winners of any professional services firm will be those who best reflect the communities they serve.

These conversations can be difficult. It`s simply human nature to avoid conversation altogether or kick the feedback gently.
